Documents shared ahead of a Herefordshire Council cabinet meeting this week show that a proposed transport hub, due to be located at the Station Approach in Hereford, could cost up to £10m.
A number of design options were reportedly recommended, with councillors discussed the multi-million pound spending plans.
The Hereford Transport Hub is intended to provide an integrated modern public transport interchange, in the forecourt area of Hereford Railway Station. The council hopes it will enable passengers to switch easily between different modes of transport, including bus, rail, cycle and taxi.
The key objectives of the new hub will be supporting economic growth, improving accessibility and encouraging active travel in line with the council’s ambitions and national targets.
What’s more, the local authority has said the hub will improve the public realm around the railway station and create better walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure, which could allow for improved integration of the new developments with the historic city core.
The council also hopes to use it to improve access to Hereford railway station and the new interchange infrastructure, address the decline in Hereford’s traditional role as a regional economic hub, encourage the transport mode shift away from cars by facilitating travel by public transport, better welcome visitors to the city and establish it as an attractive environment for visitors and commuters.
Moreover, the hub project is co-ordinated with other developments in the city with the overall aim of removing barriers to public transport, improving journeys for pedestrians and cyclists and improving public spaces.
