Renewable electricity supplier Fastned has opened its first 350 kW fast charging station in Sunderland, UK as part of its aim to accelerate the transition to electric mobility.
The station has four 50 kW fast chargers and two 175 kW fast chargers that are already enabled for 350 kW charging. It features solar panels on the canopy and supplied to drivers comes from the sun and wind.
Charging at the station in Sunderland will be free until the payment system is activated during 2019. Going forwards an introductory price will be charged.
Charging and paying will then done via an EV charge card, debit/credit card, Apple Pay and Android Pay. Later in the year customers will be able to pay using the Fastned App for automatic charging (Autocharge).
“This is a tremendous asset for the North East. With another fast charging station under construction and five more smaller stations planned, we are making it easier for motorists who already drive electric vehicles and those who want to go green and make the switch to a more sustainable form of transport,” said North East Joint Transport Committee chair, councillor Martin Gannon.
The new fast charging station is designed, built, and operated by Fastned. It is owned by the North East Joint Transport Committee and funded through the Go Ultra Low Cities Grant and the European Regional Development Fund.
Fastned has won another tender for five locations for fast-charging stations in the North East of England, organised by the North East Joined Transport Committee.
