Having communicated with the leaders of professional associations and road transport groups, the French government has decided to: “suspend indefinitely the device of the green tax.” In a statement, Ségolène Royal and Alain Vidal noted the “difficulties” in implementing the environmental tax, including phased experimentation. The ministers cited “the need to clarify the sources of funding for the use of infrastructure to achieve a clear and fair system.”
Ministers felt there was a willingness of transportation professionals to participate in solutions towards equitable and sustainable funding. Moving forward, the ministries committed to the swift creation of a working group involving all stakeholders tasked with co-constructing a solution. The group will also “intensify the search for solutions to the overall social and economic situation, including the construction of competitiveness to allow the preservation of businesses and jobs.” Shares in Atlantia, the majority shareholder in Ecomouv, fell on the news.
