Brighton & Hove City Council has announced that more than £8m will be spent improving its streets over the next year.
Local councillors will be presented with a report at cabinet next week that sets out the council’s plans for improving roads, pavements and other transport infrastructure.
The Local Transport Plan 2025/26 sets out how the £8.36m the council received this year will be spent.
- Almost £4m will be spent on improving roads
- An extra £2.1m will be spent on addressing immediate problems including potholes
- £620,000 on improving pavements
- More than £3m will be spent on improving safety and accessibility and creating space for active and sustainable travel.
Brighton & Hove reports that in addition to tackling the condition of its roads, it will also be working to make roads safer, accessible and encourage more active and sustainable travel.
This includes £1.2m to help deliver the city’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, including active travel schemes on the A23 and the A259 seafront road.
Brighton & Hove City Council cabinet member for transport, parking and public realm Trevor Muten said: “Tackling potholes and improving our roads is a key priority for this council.
“We’ve had many years of underinvestment, which has led to a huge backlog in repairs and maintenance.
“The condition of our road surfaces is unacceptable, but this plan will see us prioritise the areas most in need of improvement over the next 12 months.
“We’ll be making roads and junctions safer, especially those outside our schools, improving accessibility and creating infrastructure to encourage more people to make active and sustainable travel choices.”
Achievements and innovations in road maintenance will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
