ADEPT (the Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport) has opened a three-year £30m programme aimed at decarbonising roads across the UK.
The project, named ADEPT Live Labs 2: Decarbonising Local Roads in the UK, is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT). It aims to enable resilient, net zero carbon, local road networks through the decarbonisation of transport infrastructure.
The organisation is considering the process of decarbonisation in terms of the entire life cycle of roads, from construction to maintenance to decommission.
The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2022, with proposals welcome from any UK country. Successful applications to the fund will be expected to consider how decarbonisation measures can be implemented across the community and to develop resilient solutions.
Council-led teams will present at a Dragons’ Den style panel, after which proposals will receive help to fully cost their ideas.
The programme is designed to address the lack of a national approach on road decarbonisation and wider issues surrounding decarbonised infrastructure.
Karl McCartney, transport minister, said: “I’m thrilled that ADEPT has launched its Live Labs 2 programme, making the most of £30m of government funding to build truly resilient and sustainable road networks that are fit for our net zero future.”
ADEPT has worked with local authorities across the UK to provide transport solutions, such as its recent project with Kent County Council.
