UK businesses can now apply for funding to help develop zero-emission vehicle technologies and a supporting supply chain, Innovate UK has announced.
The non-departmental public body has been allocated up to £15m from the UK government’s £80m Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund Driving Electric Revolution programme and from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles.
It will support business research into next-generation EVs, hybrid aircraft, energy generation, smart grids, industrial drives, consumer products, agricultural vehicles, ships, and rail.
The funding competition, entitled Catalysing Green Innovation, has two strands.
In Strand 1, up to £5m is available to support business-led projects that aim to improve the UK supply chain for power electronics, machines, and drives.
In Strand 2, up t0 £10m is available to support feasibility studies and research and development projects looking to develop technologies for zero-emission vehicles or that target emissions significantly lower than 75g of CO2 per km.
Furthermore, Strand 2 projects must build on a previous research project or feasibility study and could work on niche or mainstream vehicles including motorcycles, cars, goods vehicles and emergency vehicles.
According to Innovate UK, work could include battery technologies; electrification of conventional powertrains; hybridisation technologies; technologies that increase the efficiency of powertrain or auxiliary systems; hydrogen technologies; range extender technologies; and EV charging services including charging solutions, roaming, integration and grid services.
The competition is now open, and the deadline for applications in both strands is 11am on 29 July 2020.
Businesses of any size may apply, and they can work alone or with up to two other organisations.
Innovate UK said it expects Strand 1 projects to range in size between £100,000 and £500,000 and last between 3-9 months.
Strand 2 projects are expected to range in size between £100,000 and £500,000 and last up to six months.
