The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that 16,000 new electric vehicle (EV) chargers will be installed across the Midlands as the region secures more than £40m in government investment.
In total, 13 local authorities across the Midlands, supported by Midlands Connect, have received £40.8m from the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Fund to roll out thousands of chargers across the region.
With £200m announced at 2024 Budget to continue supporting the chargepoint rollout and £6bn of private investment in the pipeline, the UK government stated that it remains committed to fostering the nationwide EV charging network.

In 2024, 382,000 EVs were sold – up a fifth on the year before – which, the DfT reports, will be supported in the Midlands region by the more than 10,000 public chargers already available.
Future of roads minister Lilian Greenwood said: “Making charging as seamless and as easy as possible is crucial to making the switch to electric a success and rolling out over 16,000 chargers across the Midlands will make driving an EV cheaper and easier, especially for those without a driveway.
“EVs will power growth, cut emissions and improve lives in the Midlands and beyond as we continue to deliver our Plan for Change.”
Achievements and innovations in EV charging infrastructure will be recognised and celebrated at the fourth annual CiTTi Awards on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. Visit www.cittiawards.co.uk to learn more about this unmissable event for the UK’s transportation sector!
