A new competition has opened to help foster the development of innovative transport solutions in the UK.
Delivered by Connected Places Catapult (CPC), the Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG) competition will award £1.8m in funding to businesses seeking to develop research and provide solutions to some of transport’s most-pressing issues including decarbonisation.
TRIG winners will receive a grant of up to £45,000 per project for solutions that aim to accelerate the decarbonisation of local transport systems.
Ideally, these should demonstrate an understanding of the needs of local areas and communities, whilst also having the potential to be scaled-up across the UK in the future.
The competition is also seeking proposals that combine artificial intelligence, digital twins and/or digital connectivity to enable a resilient transport system delivering cheaper, cleaner, and quicker journeys for all, as well as innovative ideas that have the potential to address a UK transport challenge, across all modes and technology areas.

Now it in 10th year, TRIG has awarded more than £12m to 361 projects since 2014. In 2022, some 67 projects were awarded funding.
Previous winning projects include an app that uses augmented reality to help visually impaired passengers get around rail stations and drones to deliver packages in hard-to-reach areas.
UK technology minister Jesse Norman said: “TRIG funding has been a huge success over the past 10 years, helping to pioneer the new ideas to solve the transport problems of tomorrow.
“This latest round of funding promises to build on the knowledge that innovation is key to helping improve transport across the UK, making lives easier and creating jobs.”
Applications for this year’s TRIG competition remain open until 27 November 2023.
Innovations and achievements in sustainable urban mobility will be highlighted and celebrated at the second annual CiTTi Awards on 21 November 2023 at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
