Plug&Charge is a solution that allows to charging stations using a digital certificate via the international standard ISO 15118. This solution was generated by Berlin-based electro-mobility specialist Hubject in response to drivers having to previously needing to have a specific charging card or smartphone app to use public charging stations.
Plug&Charge is available offline and allows secure authentication and authorization of a charging process. The charging process starts automatically after the check is completed, followed by an automatic payment process.
Hubject and Daimler have cooperated in piloting an innovative system with charging point operator ebee smart technologies. Daimler’s smart EQ fortwo/forfour cars are the first electric vehicle in series production to support Plug&Charge.
The pilot solution is now ready for production and the two companies hope to provide a future-oriented response to the development of a convenient approach in relation to electro-mobility with this solution. Hubject CEO Christian Hahn says: “Together with Daimler, we are drawing closer to our vision: simple charging and payment for electric vehicles for everybody. Everywhere. Charging with Plug&Charge via ISO 15118 is our next step on the way towards a fully automated, customer-friendly charging experience.”
Market players around the world and across all industries can now join the ISO 15118 ecosystem. This standard can also host further types of applications. This can include the future integration of electric vehicles in the energy grid. Overall, this technology can help lay the foundations for secure, sustainable charging infrastructure.
