Hyundai Mobis has developed a new redundancy brake system for Level 4 or higher AVs that self-activates in emergency situations or following failure of the primary brakes.
The electronic auxiliary system comprises two ECUs and a software control platform. Under normal operating conditions, the two controllers are connected to each other and exchange data. However, in the event that the main brake system ceases to function correctly, the controllers can detect this fault and order the auxiliary brake system to take over.
While similar technology has already been applied to buses, Hyundai Mobis claims to be the first company to successfully develop a redundancy brake system that can be immediately applied to passenger cars or SUVs.
