DHL has announced that it is no longer actively pursuing partnership options for its StreetScooter activities.
The company attributed the decision to “global economic uncertainties” following the “unforeseen impact” of the coronavirus on its international business activities.
DHL said it will instead concentrate on the operation of its existing fleet of StreetScooter electric vehicles.
“Thanks to our StreetScooter we have one of the biggest electric delivery fleets in the world and have made a significant contribution to the development of e-mobility,” said Frank Appel, CEO, Deutsche Post DHL Group.
“We have always said that we do not want to be a car manufacturer. A further scaling of the business without the right partner does not fit our long-term strategic goals.
“Independent from this decision, we will further foster the transition of our fleet towards e-mobility.
“We are committed to achieving our Mission 2050 target of zero-emission logistics by 2050.”
DHL said the refocusing of StreetScooter is expected to result in one-off charges of €300-400m (£255-340m) for the current financial year, though the impact on cash flow will be limited.
