The UK government has announced the introduction of a digital driver’s licence as part of its new GOV.UK Wallet, a digital platform designed to simplify access to government-issued documents and services.
The initiative, spearheaded by the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), aims to enhance convenience, security, and efficiency for users.
The GOV.UK Wallet, available on iOS and Android devices, will initially launch with a Digital Veteran Card later this year, followed by a pilot of a mobile driver’s licence in 2025.
The digital alternative will allow users to prove their age and right to drive using their smartphones. Physical documents will remain available for those who prefer them.
UK science secretary Peter Kyle described the project as “a game changer,” stating, “GOV.UK Wallet will mean that every letter or identity document you receive from the government could be issued to you virtually.
“For people who choose to use GOV.UK Wallet, they will find it easier to prove they’re entitled to benefits or check their age when buying alcohol or DIY equipment, with more security and trust than ever before.”
The announcement forms part of a broader strategy to overhaul public sector technology, which a recent report suggests could deliver £45bn in efficiency savings.
A GOV.UK app is also set to launch this summer, offering personalised, secure access to services such as passport renewals and MOT reminders.
UK transport secretary Heidi Alexander added: “This innovation puts power back in the hands of the people, making everyday interactions faster, easier, and more secure.”
The digital transition aligns with the government’s Plan for Change, which seeks to modernise public services and reduce administrative burdens on individuals and businesses.
