Spin, Ford Motor Company’s micromobility unit, has announced its e-scooters have reached 10,000 rides in Milton Keynes during the first month of the town’s year-long trial.
Since launching on 22 August 100 scooters have been used by 3,500 users. Spin said this shows users have not only tried the e-scooters but have gone back for further trips.
According to the company, the quick uptake illustrates a shift to sustainable transport. Its data indicates that around 41% of e-scooter trips directly replace car travel.
Steve Pyer, UK general manager at Spin, said: “We were very excited to bring the first of our UK e-scooter fleets to Milton Keynes in August and, following a highly-encouraging response from local riders, it is exceptionally positive to see this rapid rate of adoption for this great alternative to car travel.
“We will continue to work closely with Milton Keynes Council to ensure continued success. This is the first of many Spin e-scooter trials across the UK as part of our firm commitment to fully integrate e-scooters into local transport ecosystems.”
As legalised e-scooter trials continue across the UK, Spin said it plans to scale up to 300 scooters in the coming weeks and plans to give away hundreds of free helmets to Milton Keynes residents to ensure public safety.
Whilst there cannot be in-person safety courses due to coronavirus restrictions, Spin has created an online learning course, Spin Safe Digital, featuring parking techniques and riding practices. If riders complete an online test on the safety rules they will be awarded a £5 discount.
The company has admitted to incidents of irresponsible parking but ensures it is working with Milton Keynes Council to resolve these.
