Swedish micromobilty provider Voi has partnered with Oxfordshire County Council to bring an e-scooter trial to the Headington area of Oxford this February.
The council said the 12-month trial will enable residents to travel on an outdoor mode of transport in a socially distanced manner while current lockdown measures remain in place.
Furthermore, the council hopes the vehicles will provide a convenient and accessible method of transport for point-to-point journeys or the first and last mile of public transport.
Yvonne Constance, cabinet member for environment, Oxfordshire County Council, said: “Our electric scooter trials in Oxford with Voi have brought us an exciting opportunity to explore alternative and green transport options for our communities.
“As a county council, we have set out our continued commitment to addressing climate change and transport innovation is a key part of that.”
The trial will initially be held in the area of Headington before gradually expanding to include wider areas of the city should demand increase. There is also scope to expand the trial to other towns across the county if there is interest.
Voi said it will work with the council to determine how e-scooters fit into Oxfordshire’s mobility ecosystem.
“Micromobility will play a strategic part in the green recovery of our cities and towns, offering a flexible and low carbon way to travel,” said Richard Corbett, Voi’s regional general manager of UK, Ireland and Benelux.
“E-scooters can easily be integrated with public transport, replacing short car journeys, ultimately creating better cities for living, free of pollution and congestion.”
