A mobility hub launched by Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Brompton Bike Hire at Imperial College London’s South Kensington campus is now operational.
As previously reported by CiTTi, the partnership will run a sustainable and active travel hub as part of a four-month academic trial assessing whether staff travel can be transformed.
Julian Scriven, managing director of Brompton Bike Hire, said: “We were delighted to be asked to be involved with this pilot where we can introduce the team at Imperial to the joys of active travel.
“Understanding that multiple modes of transport need to work collaboratively is vital in the drive toward net zero carbon.
“Projects that look to introduce the concept of multimodal hubs are helping build an understanding of how we can scale such initiatives in the future to deliver a true alternative to the single occupancy privately owned car.”
Surveys will be carried out to identify changes in travel behaviour and attitudes toward the use of shared resources. What’s more, the research team aims to build on the study’s conclusion with further research into the future of urban mobility.
Professor Mary Ryan, vice-dean for research in the Faculty of Engineering, added: “The holistic approach taken in this project is central to our Transition to Zero Pollution Strategy, addressing not just the technology enablers, but community uptake, individual behaviour and economic factors.”
Data from the trial will be used to help Imperial understand how to encourage their staff to make sustainable travel habit changes.
The feedback will also provide Enterprise with information as it works with local and national governments and other organisations to develop additional mobility hubs and Mobility-as-a-Service offerings.
