IoT analyst firm Berg Insight has revealed that, despite the pandemic, car sharing services grew by 10% in 2020, and it predicts these services will continue to expand steadily over the next five years.
As part of its Carsharing Telematics Market report, the company anticipates global carsharing fleets will reach 971,000 vehicles by 2025 and will involve over 190 million people.
“Several carsharing operators’ expansion plans were put on hold during 2020 but are now continued in 2021 instead,” explained Martin Svegander, senior analyst at Berg Insight.
The research found that carsharing companies have introduced new services in the last few months to comply with the latest user requirements. This includes the need for longer domestic holiday rentals, as well as short trips to avoid public transport.
Furthermore, the report also highlighted the shift towards carsharing schemes as a replacement for car ownership.
“The speed of implementation and the profitability enabled by the most suitable mobility platform become a crucial asset to compete and win in the market of these new services offered to customers, always in rapid evolution” added Roberto Bordin, smart mobility product owner of Targa Telematics, one of the IoT platform providers mentioned in the report.
