Environment secretary Michael Grove published a new Clean Air Strategy to cut air pollution and save lives.
The action is set to reduce an estimated £1 billion of air pollution costs to society by 2020, and £2.5 billion every year from 2030. The strategy also outlines how the government will work with media outlets to improve public access to the air quality forecast to help people understand how they can contribute to improve air quality.
Although “Air quality has improved significantly since 2010 but sixty years on from the historic Clean Air Act a clear truth remains – air pollution is making people ill, shortening lives and damaging our economy and environment,” said environment secretary Michael Gove, this is why we’re “launching this clean air strategy, backed up with new primary legislation.”
Grove continued: “Government cannot act alone in tackling air pollution. Our strategy sets out how we will work with businesses, farmers, industry and households to develop innovative new solutions to reduce emissions. It also highlights how we can all take action and play an important role in cleaning up our air.”
The new strategy plan is currently in its consultation period and is part of the government’s 25 Year Plan to save the environment.
