Nissan’s fully autonomous prototype technology, ProPILOT, enables vehicles to operate on urban roads and freeways without requiring any driver interference. The only thing the driver needs to do is select a destination at the beginning of the journey using the navigation system.
The ProPILOT technology has 360-degree sensing capability, which utilises 12 cameras, 9 radar sensors, 6 laser scanners and 12 sonar sensors. The technology also makes use of artificial intelligence which analyses complex driving scenarios in real time. There have also been further improvements made to the latest prototype technology which mimics human driving to give the smoothest driving feel.
Nissan’s ProPILOT technology the allows for door-to-door autonomous navigation, from when the destination is chosen to arrival. The vehicle and technology becomes responsible for turning at intersections, entering toll-gates, changing lanes, merging and exiting highways, stopping at traffic lights and going again when the lights change.
Takao Asami, Nissan’s senior vice president in charge of research and advanced engineering, says: “Our next-generation ProPILOT prototype showcases technology that will be available for real-world use from 2020. Today’s demonstration is another example of our successful work toward creating an autonomous driving future for all.”
