Oxford is proposing to introduce a Zero Emission Zone in Oxford city centre to ban diesel and petrol vehicles by 2035.
The aim is to start phasing out some vehicle types and making a number of streets emission free, eventually banning all vehicle types in line with technological developments.
Currently, the levels of nitrogen dioxide in Oxford city centre are at an illegal high. NOx gases contribute to cancer, asthma, stroke and heart disease, contributing to around 40,000 deaths in the UK every year.
The proposal would ensure that emissions on George Street, Oxford’s most polluted street, would be cut by 74% by 2035 – bringing it below the legal limit.
