A new bus station consisting of hanging ‘pods’ has been created by engineer Rombout Frieling, in collaboration with the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE).
RISE asked Frieling lab to lead a project to jointly redesign the electric bus experience and apply it in the extreme climate of Umeå.
The snow-proof bus station – called the Station of Being – includes hanging, rotating pods that provide comfortable leaning possibilities.
The pods also shield users from wind, providing comfort in averse conditions, whilst not needing any power.
Furthermore, a subtle spectacle of light and sounds in the roof is triggered whenever a bus approaches.
Frieling said of his creation: “Waiting for a bus is often regarded as wasting time. People are tired from work and are waiting for a bus whilst trying to indulge in their phone.
“The Station of Being aims to cater to this; it frees travellers from the duty of looking out for a bus and instead gives them time to just ‘be’.”
