The Italian government has approved a public transport voucher, worth up to €60 (£50), for students, workers and pensioners who earn less than €35,000 (£29,420) a year.
The scheme is intended to come into force in September this year, and will enable commuters to buy a seasonal pass for local transport routes such as buses, trams and metro lines.
It will also work on non-city coaches and for second class journeys on both regional and national rail transport.
The single payment, which has an upper limit of €60, is part of a €79m (£66.4m) programme to incentivise use of public transport and to help with the cost of living.
The e-voucher must be requested online by the end 2022 using a residents’ digital identity card. It will be non-transferable.
Andrea Orlando, labour minister, said: “[This is] a concrete support for students, workers, retirees, for all those citizens who use public transport, on road and rail.”
The government reportedly plans to continue the scheme in 2023.
