VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg, the municipal company responsible for operating the U-Bahn, trams, and buses throughout the Bavarian city of Nuremberg, has ordered 12 four-section Avenio trams from Siemens Mobility.
The contract includes options for a total of up to 75 additional trams. The WLAN-enabled trams will serve on possible new lines or be used to expand VAG’s existing offering. Commissioning is planned for the end of 2022.
The Avenio’s step-free interior has been designed to allow quick entries and exits, thereby shortening dwell times at the stops.
Passengers with restricted mobility in wheelchairs or with walkers have multifunctional space available directly at the door for parking or sitting. A folding entry ramp is provided at the second door.
Furthermore, the modular tram is 90% recyclable and utilises a large share of recovered braking energy for heating or feeding back into the power grid.
Sabrina Soussan, CEO of Siemens Mobility, said: “We have a long-standing partnership with VAG Nürnberg, and together we’ve implemented Germany’s first fully automated metro system.
“We’ve also initiated, for the first time worldwide, mixed operations with automated and driver-operated metros on the same route, making us forerunners in applying digital technologies.
“I’m especially pleased that, with our Avenio, we are now also delivering a state-of-the-art tram fleet to Nuremberg.”
