France is home to the most expensive toll road in Europe, according to a new report by UK B2B light commercial vehicle rental provider Northgate.
The company analysed data from 44 countries, looking at toll roads, bridges, and tunnels, to reveal the most expensive driving routes in Europe for passenger cars and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).
In France, passenger cars travelling from Paris to Marseille, along the A6/A7, are currently required to pay £52.59 one way.
The Italian route from Milan to Naples was revealed to be the second most expensive, costing £50.73 per journey and Boda to Oslo in Norway came in third at £45.16.
Surprisingly, whilst known for being expensive in the UK, the M6 toll road ranked 15th in Northgate’s analysis, with drivers required to pay £6.60 for their journey.
Meanwhile, North Macedonia offers the cheapest toll road option, with the 37km route from Petrovec to Veles costing £1.15.
The cheapest bridge crossing is the Svinesundsbron bridge, which connects both Norway and Sweden and costs £1.74 to cross. In comparison, the most expensive tunnel in Northgate’s study, the Great St Bernard in Switzerland, costs £22.85.
The Sozina tunnel in Montenegro and the Dublin Port tunnel in Ireland were the cheapest tunnels in the analysis, costing drivers £2.22 and £2.58 respectively.
And with toll roads reportedly making up 7% of the overall transportation cost in Western Europe, businesses are currently paying £305.24 per HGV to travel the A6:A7 Paris to Marseille one-way.
The Great St Bernard tunnel, which connects Western Switzerland to Italy, is the second most expensive route for HGV drivers, at £137.26 per journey, while the Bodo to Oslo route in Norway is the third most expensive, costing £116.84.
In comparison, driving from Petrovec to Veles in North Macedonia will cost HGV drivers £3.17 – the cheapest out of the routes analysed – while the Dublin Port tunnel in Ireland and Vadlaheidargong tunnel in Iceland are also amongst the cheapest routes, with both costing under £10 to use for HGV drivers.
