Greece’s Infrastructure Ministry wants motorists to be able to use a single electronic device that can be accepted at all toll booths across the country by October.
Plans for the universal electronic pass system were mapped out last October, according to Giorgos Karagiannis, Greece’s general secretary for infrastructure.
By the end of the summer, all main technical issues for the interoperability of all operating companies’ systems are expected to have been resolved.
When all systems are interconnected, drivers will be able to use the e-pass device of any contractor to drive through electronic tollgates across Greece – provided they have sufficient credit in their e-pass account.
However, interoperability will not be absolute, as topping up the account of the device with credit will only be possible at the tolls of the company that has issued it, and discount programmes will only apply to travelling on the highway of each e-pass device’s issuer.
