From the first of January, 2018, there will be a new Kilometre Charge in Belgium for any semi-trailer towing vehicles that are 3.5 tons GVW or below, with a body code BC. Vehicles will be required to have a working On Board Unit (OBU) that is switched on at all times if they are to travel on public roads in Belgium.
Semi-trailer towing vehicles have been identified by the three Belgian regions as eligible to be subject to the kilometre charge. Such vehicles are used for transport goods, differing from vans with a tow bar as they have a cabin and a linking plate for an additional trailer. This pushes the combined Gross Vehicle Weight to be over 3.5 tons.
As of the new year, such vehicles will be charged for each kilometre charges based on their weight and exhaust norm.
