Kapsch TrafficCom USA has announced the delivery completion for a cashless tolling system on behalf of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The new tolling system covers four bridges and two tunnels between New York and New Jersey, 13 zones, two-way traffic with one direction tolled at reversible lanes and three plazas.
The scope of the project included the replacement of the legacy toll collection system at all Hudson River and Staten Island Bridge crossings operated by the the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey with AET technology provided by Kapsch.
Kapsch also installed new tolling sensors and equipment providing proprietary stereoscopic nVDC technology in order to create all electronic transactions.
The final step of the project, a cashless tolling solution for the Lincoln Tunnel – reportedly the toll point with the highest traffic volume and commercial traffic in the USA – went live on 11 December.
The new system means that millions of drivers taking the tunnels or bridges into the city no longer need to stop at toll booths. Those without E-ZPass will have their license plates automatically recorded and receive their bills via mail.
Rick Cotton, executive director for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said: “This upgrade is a win-win for all drivers who use our crossings by cutting precious minutes from daily commutes, by reducing vehicle accidents in toll lanes, and by decreasing emissions from vehicles waiting in line to pay cash at toll booths.”
In addition to the six crossings, the system also includes Central Host functionality with primary and secondary host server installations. The system is maintained 24/7 by Kapsch personnel.
