Liverpool City Council has adopted a new National Parking Platform (NPP) initiative, operating its parking via an Open Market parking model which will enable customers to pay for parking via multiple payment applications.
By enabling drivers to make cashless payment choices based on their personal preferences – whether that be in terms of price, quality or value-added services – the council hopes that an Open Market model will incentivise innovation and improving user experience.
Liverpool City Council will initially introduce this new model in 99 on-street locations and 8 car parks. RingGo will be one of the cashless providers offered at these sites.
Liverpool City Council head of parking, Ken Prior, said: “We are delighted to be one of the first Local Authorities to offer the residents and visitors of Liverpool increased choice via the NPP.
“Customers will be able to choose their preferred payment option across multiple apps alongside pay and display machines when parking on-street and in car parks across the city.”
Liverpool is the latest council to join the NPP pilot scheme currently taking place across the UK.

Existing participants include Manchester, Oxfordshire, Chester West and Cheshire, Coventry, East Suffolk and Peterborough.
Managing director at RingGo, Peter O’Driscoll, said: “It’s great to see uptake of the Open Market model in Liverpool.
“The future of parking involves increased choice for motorists, and the NPP can provide this in the palm of your hand. It has the power to revolutionise parking.
“As the uptake of digital services increases across the UK, we can expect many more local authorities to make the switch to this new parking model.”
Achievements and innovations in smart parking will be celebrated at the third annual CiTTi Awards, which will be held on 26 November 2024 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
