Currently Transport for London is consulting on proposals for the introduction of tougher emissions standards for the Low Emission Zone and to expand the Ultra-Low Emission Zone.
The proposal suggests the introduction of a London-wide Euro VI standard going forward for all heavy vehicles from 2020 – this would include heavy specialist vehicles, lorries, coaches and buses. Currently, London’s Low Emission Zone (LEZ) requires all heavy vehicles to meet a Euro IV PM standard and should they fail to do so, need to pay a daily charge of £200.
The proposal is suggesting “that all heavy vehicles driving in the London-wide LEZ will need to meet a Euro VI standard for Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and PM or pay an extra daily charge of £100. Vehicles that do not meet the Euro 4 PM standard would now need to pay a total £300 daily charge,” says TfL.
Likewise, there is a proposal for the expansion of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone, which is to come into action in April 2019, to be expanded up to, but not including, the North and South Circulars by 2021.
TfL have explained that any “light vehicles which do not meet these standards would need to pay a daily charge of £12.50 in order to drive in the ULEZ. This would be in addition to any applicable daily Congestion Charge in central London.”
TfL asks whether people are in favour of expanding the area where ULEZ emission standards apply to light vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, vans and minibuses. Likewise, the proposed changes would mean that all vehicles traveling within the zone would need to adhere to the emissions standards in the inner London area.
Finally, TfL want to know if people are happy to implement the proposed on the suggested date: 25 October 2021. The proposal consultation ends tomorrow on the 28th of February.
