Leicester City Council has announced that work has started on new traffic-related schemes in two residential communities in the area.
Some the traffic-calming measures include speed humps and a speed table, which are reportedly being installed on Strasbourg Drive in Beaumont Leys and at Evington Valley Road in Spinney Hills.
The schemes in Evington Valley Road are part of broader plans to reduce traffic in the area, including the installation of speed humps in nearby Gwendolen Road within an area-wide 20mph zone agreed to earlier in 2022.
According to the council, local diversions have been in place and clearly signposted during works.
Both initiatives are part of wider road safety ambitions in locations singled out by residents, especially near schools.
These measures are likewise part of the council’s commitment to active travel and reduced car journeys, particularly for school runs.
Adam Clarke, councillor and Leicester deputy city mayor for transportation, clean air and climate emergency, said: “These schemes are an essential part of our work to make street safer for all road users, by encouraging more use of sustainable travel such as walking or cycling, reducing carbon and improving air quality in neighbourhoods in the process.
“Lowering traffic speeds reduces the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident, as well as cutting emissions – both of which make walking or cycling to school a safer and more pleasant alternative.
“They are among a range of schemes designed to make this part of the city safer, greener and healthier. I’m very grateful for the patience of residents as we carry out these improvements.”
