More than 100 real-time displays that show when buses are due have been upgraded throughout Nottingham city centre.
Some 102 new displays now show the service operator and have icons for key locations, such as hospitals, universities and sports grounds. Cancelled services will also remain on screen.
The displays are also anti-glare, anti-reflective and have sun-readability, which means they adjust to ambient light levels to make it easier to read at different times of the day and in varying weather. Based on feedback from passengers, the font sizes of the live journey information and service disruption page have been increased to make it clearer to read.
Each sign operates on a sim card basis, using 4G – and eventually 5G – networking instead of the previous system’s private mobile radio network. Nottingham City Council said this allows the displays to communicate back to it when there is an issue with journey information getting through to the sign.
Furthermore, new wayfinding totem displays and multi-line journey summary boards will also be installed in the city centre and at busy locations, including the Queen’s Medical Centre, City Hospital and the University of Nottingham.
The totems are due to be installed later this year and will show users live bus data and offer journey planning. Each totem can provide local maps, journey options and a QR code that, when scanned, will copy all relevant journey details to the user’s phone.
The upgrades and new totems have been funded following a successful bid by Nottingham City Council to the Transforming Cities Fund.
