Passengers across England can now access real-time performance data on train punctuality and reliability at more than 1,700 stations, as the UK government introduces a new initiative to improve transparency and accountability in the rail sector.
The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has launched digital displays at major railway stations, providing statistics on service punctuality and cancellations for individual operators.
At smaller stations, passengers can scan QR codes to access the same information online. This marks the first time that station-level train performance data has been made publicly available.
UK transport secretary Heidi Alexander described the initiative as a “new era of rail accountability” and a step towards “rebuilding trust with passengers”.
The move is part of the government’s ‘Plan for Change’, which aims to improve service quality and enhance connectivity while holding train operators to account.
The data is also available via the Office of Rail and Road’s (ORR) new online portal, which provides nationwide performance insights.
Additionally, digital screens will feature updates on ongoing efforts by train operators and Network Rail to improve service reliability.
Rail Delivery Group chief executive Jacqueline Starr welcomed the initiative, emphasising its role in demonstrating the industry’s commitment to addressing delays and cancellations.
Transport Focus director Natasha Grice also highlighted the importance of using the data to enhance service performance.
The move forms part of a wider transformation of the UK’s rail network, including the establishment of Great British Railways to unify track and train operations.
Alongside this, the new Public Ownership Act is expected to bring the first rail services into public control from May 2025, with projected savings of up to £150m annually.
As the government works to address rail service challenges, the provision of real-time station-level data is intended to drive improvements and ensure passengers can travel with greater confidence and convenience.
