A team of academics at the University of Lancaster have studied the impact of the London congestion charge on traffic accidents by examining monthly accident counts before and after the charge. In a recent draft, Colin Green, professor of economics, reports that “a substantial and robust decline in accidents associated with the advent of the congestion charge”. The draft report further states that the nature of the charge may have caused “unintended substitutions as traffic and accidents shift to other proximate areas, times and to uncharged vehicles”.
