Volkswagen has acquired a minority stake in SeeReal Technologies to further its development of augmented reality display technologies for automotive applications.
Research cooperation between the two companies commenced at the end of 2018.
Together they are exploring a multitude of development areas, including how potentially hazardous situations on the road may be projected into the driver’s environment in three dimensions; whether touchable displays can be suspended instead of controls; if partners and telephone conversations can appear as holograms; and whether passengers will be able to play hovering three-dimensional Tetris.
Axel Heinrich, head of innovation at Volkswagen, said: “Augmented reality will be a key component in future mobility and interaction concepts. This is why we are focusing on key technologies such as holography, which will present this new reality in a fascinating way. We will be providing the automotive requirements for this exciting project and the know-how in 3D technology will be contributed by SeeReal.”
