The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has announced the shortlist of candidates for the new national headquarters of Great British Railways (GBR).
The list includes Birmingham, Crewe, Derby, Doncaster, Newcastle upon Tyne and York.
The competition to find the new base, outside of London, was launched in February, with local authorities asked to submit expressions of interest by mid March.
The GBR Transition Team (GBRTT) has opened a public vote to test the population’s support for different locations.
UK transport secretary Grant Shapps said: “Our world-leading railways have served this country well for 200 years and this is a huge step in the reforms, which will shape our network for the next 200.
“Great British Railways will create a truly sustainable, modern and fair railway network for passengers and freight customers.
“I’m calling on people across the country to play a key part in this once-in-a-generation reform and vote for the new home of our railways.”
Ministers will make a final decision based on public feedback, with an announcement expected later this year.
The national headquarters will form the core of the rail network and offer strategic direction for the running of GBR.
