Siemens Mobility and French public transport network Régie autonome des transports Parisiens (RATP) have announced the successful modernisation and extension of Paris Métro’s automated Line 14 to Paris-Orly airport.
The extension marks the first migration of an automated driverless metro line to the latest generation GoA4 driverless automated system, Trainguard MT CBTC.
The new system, which was implemented during the past six years during passenger services, has been desgined to enable more efficient and reliable services on the line, which has doubled in length by 14km (8.6 miles) due to extensions to the north and south.
With a headway of 85 seconds along the entire 28km (17.3-mile) route, Line 14 is now the longest line in the Paris network and will eventually accommodate more than one million passengers daily.
The expansion enables passengers to travel from Orly Airport to Paris city centre in 20 minutes and from the northern business districts in Saint-Denis Pleyel to Orly Airport in 40 minutes.
What’s more, Line 14 will eventually connect to the future Grand Paris Express network, a new 200km (124-mile) automatic metro network currently under construction in the Ile-de-France region.
Siemens Mobility CEO Michael Peter said: “The timely completion of this crucial metro project for this summer’s world sports event hosted in Paris highlights the immense time pressure and collaborative efforts involved.
“We are grateful to our valued partners at RATP for their trust and unwavering support, without which this accomplishment would not have been possible.”
In 1998, Siemens Mobility partnered with RATP to build the first driverless high-capacity automated metro line in Paris.
In 2018, Siemens was awarded contracts to overhaul the line’s automation, replacing the 26-year-old Meteor system with the advanced Trainguard MT CBTC GoA4 system.
The upgrade included building a new operations centralised control station and equipping 72 new trains.
Achievements and innovations in urban rail services will be celebrated at the third annual CiTTi Awards, which will be held on 26 November 2024 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
