The Welsh government has released its draft budget 2025-2026 promising £651m to improve, support and maintain public transport.
The Welsh Government’s Draft Budget for 2025-26 is £21.4bn of resource expenditure and £3.4bn of capital expenditure.
Transport in Wales will receive £651m in government funding for 2025-2026, this is in comparison to 2024-2025 when the sector received £581m in funding – a 11.97% increase from 2024 to 2025.
The budget announcement also promised to maintain capital transport grants to local authorities, a £120m fund designed to support investment in resilient road projects, safe streets, active travel, bus infrastructure and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Efforts to modernise transport grants, exploring opportunities to amalgamate grants, are also underway.
Through additional funding of almost £70m resource and £51m capital, the Welsh government is also modernising its railways.
The total allocation to the rail capital budget (including non-Core Valley Lines elements) is £181.6m.
The budget also outlines a commitment to delivering better bus networks, fixing roads and providing local-district choice to its 20mph road limit decision to make its road safer.
Cabinet secretary for finance Mark Drakeford said: “This is budget for a brighter future, delivering an extra £1.5bn for our public services and priorities, helping to put Wales firmly back on the path of growth after 14 difficult years.
“This is in stark contrast to the last couple of years when we have been forced to make some very difficult and painful decisions.
“This Draft Budget offers a real opportunity to start to rebuild and reinvigorate our public services.”
