Electreon, an Israel-based provider of wireless charging solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), has announced that it will be deploying its EV charging solution in Germany, which it claims is the ‘first-ever wireless road project’ in the country’s history.
In collaboration with EnBW, which installs charging infrastructure for EVs in Germany, Electreon plans to provide one kilometre (0.62 miles) of Electric Road System (ERS) and two charging stations, the locations of which will be selected to support the charging of local electric buses.
The two-phase project will be located in Balingen. The first phase will see a 400-metre-long (1,312ft) route with two chargepoints, and the second will see the expansion of the ERS by 600 metres (1,968ft).
The company has previously piloted the technology in Karlsruhe, another German city, which saw the installation of an electric road at the EnBW training site, which was used to power a local public bus.
“The aim of this project is not only to open up wireless charging to the public in Germany,” said Dr. Andreas Wendt, CEO of Electreon Germany.
“Other significant aspects include the development and use of a tool that will assist public transportation planners in where to install the inductive infrastructure for a specific town or region.
“We have already shown in our joint Karlsruhe project with EnBW how effective, safe, and easy to deploy wireless dynamic charging is.
“We hope this is the start of many more projects on public and private roads in Germany.”
As part of the agreement for the Balingen project, Electreon will reportedly receive up to €3.2m (£2.7m) to deploy the wireless charging infrastructure.
