King Charles III has approved a number of ministerial appointments after Conservative MP and former chancellor Rishi Sunak took over as prime minister yesterday (Tuesday October 25), including the appointment of a new transport secretary.
Mark Harper, MP for Forest of Dean, has been chosen to replace Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who was appointed by outgoing prime minister Liz Truss.
Trevelyan replaced Grant Schapps as part of Truss’s cabinet reshuffle. Schapps was given the role of business secretary by Sunak in yesterday’s cabinet announcement.
Harper was formerly chief whip of the party, minister of state for immigration and minister of state for disabled people.
Despite the reshuffle, some key roles remain unchanged, including Jeremy Hunt as chancellor, James Cleverly as foreign secretary and Ben Wallace as defence secretary.
Harper has previously voiced support for fox hunting and was an opponent of lockdowns during the pandemic.
This appointment makes Harper the third transport secretary to be named since September this year.
